Wine maker: Plozza; Wine: Sforzato di Valtellina; Vintage: 2006

Sforzato represents a wine made similarly as Amarone. Grapes are displayed on a wooden rusting and require certain time to dry up. The process fills the wine with more concentration and the final product is also of a higher alcohol volume. This 2006 Sforzato is no exception. It offers much from this mostly unknown style of wine.
First impression is kind of Italian. Great well developed garnet color with still high tannins and firm structure. The pronounced nose is full of dark fruit clashing with flower aromas. Dark sour cherries lead the fruit component. The wine nose feels medium to full body and so does the palate. This Sforzato is a serious wine. The first impression is of a pure elegance. The palate offers just what you feel on the nose and see in the glass. The wine is harmonious and well structured with a persistent aftertaste. It also holds a medium acidity which makes this wine well balanced too. Very drinkable at this stage yet very suitable for next years of cellaring. When thought of a comparison, a Brunello or a Sicilian Nero d’Avola were comming to my mind.
Review in brief: well balanced fruity and elegant Sforzato with great complexity and firm structure with just a perfect balance for high drinkability.
